Guardians of the Wild
This project sheds light on the ancient tradition of hunting and the hunters who embody a deep connection with the natural world, highlighting not only the beauty and mystery of their practices but also the challenges and threats facing wildlife today.
Growing up as an African child, I was captivated by folklore about hunting. These stories sparked a curiosity in me about the reality behind these tales, leading me to explore the lives of African hunters. Hunting, an ancestral practice of tracking and capturing wild game, holds profound cultural significance, intertwining human survival with respect for nature.
Venturing into the forests of Abeokuta, Ogun State, I documented a group of hunters as they prepared to receive a prestigious chieftaincy title. This project aims to illuminate the lesser-known aspects of hunting in Africa, offering insights into its traditions, purposes, and evolution over time.
In many African societies, hunting is more than a means of survival; it is a ritual that celebrates the natural world and reinforces cultural values. The use of dogs to track and flush out animals reflects a symbiotic relationship between humans and animals, one that has been passed down through generations. This practice, while steeped in tradition, also underscores the delicate balance between humans and the environment, a balance that is increasingly threatened by modern pressures.
Hunting is a vital part of rural African life, serving as both a livelihood and a social event that honors esteemed community members. The joy of a successful hunt, the pride in providing for one's family, and the communal sharing of bushmeat are all integral to this cultural practice. However, this tradition also faces challenges as wildlife populations decline and the pressures of modernization encroach upon these age-old practices.
Guardians of the Wild is more than a documentation of hunting; it is a narrative that seeks to protect and celebrate the intricate relationships between humans, wildlife, and the environment. By exploring the traditions of African hunters, this project advocates for the preservation of natural spaces, the protection of wildlife, and the safeguarding of cultural heritage.
